Another 2014 Super Treasure Hunt Update...

With the release of Hot Wheels Batch M, we are now 12 Super Treasure Hunts into 2014, so time for another update...

Since we last did this with the Greenwood Corvette, the Datsun 510 Wagon was unveiled, allowing us to unmask our excitement for what certainly will be our favorite Super of the year.  That is probably no secret.  But we will get to that later.  It is one of the last 3, one of which still has not been unveiled.

But looking at the First 12, Chevy dominance continues, with 8 out of the 12 Supers wearing a bowtie.  To add to that, the last two have been classic Corvettes.  The Greenwood is definitely a winner in our book, and the jury is still out on the '69.

As far as the others, the safe guess is that the Gasser remains the favorite of most, but around here the Datsun might pass that.  We will have to determine that when we do the Lamley Award Vote later this year.

For now, here are all 12.  Pick a fave, and then wait for the next one...

My favorite of these 12?  It always changes, but there is at this moment, from best to worst:

  1. Greenwood Corvette
  2. '83 Silverado
  3. '55 Gasser
  4. '70 Chevelle
  5. '71 Mustang
  6. Nova Wagon
  7. '07 Mustang
  8. Opala SS
  9. Camaro Special Edition
  10. '69 Corvette
  11. Sand Blaster
  12. Twin Mill
Feel free to add your list...

First Look: Hot Wheels '69 Corvette Super Treasure Hunt & Mainline...

Alright friends, you are going to have to give this one a chance.  Or not.

Super THs generally garner a lot of excitement, especially Corvette Supers.  But it seems that the Greenwood Super got a bit of a mixed response (we absolutely love it, many of you don't), and early indications on the '69 Vette are that there are not a lot of fans.

We get that.  Cars with flames really aren't our thing here, so this definitely isn't out favorite of the year.  And it is probably safe to say that metallic purple cars aren't our thing either.

But, on the other hand, the blue flames over the spectraflame purple with black-rim real riders actually makes for a cool-looking model.  Or maybe it just looks better than the basic version, making us believe we really like it.

Alright, we are probably not huge fans, but we are trying to stay positive.  This car will definitely pop on the pegs.  Can we say that it has grown on us, and we like the lowered stance of the Super compared to the basic?  We have no idea how that happened, whether it is a fluke with the examples we have, or something to do with the wheels, but we can get behind the stance.

We may not like it a ton, but we reserve the right to like it more as we go along.  Let's see if that happens...

The Great Super Treasure Hunt Experiment of 2014: My first gas station find, and mid-afternoon at Target...

The great experiment continues.  My attempt to find all 15 Super Treasure Hunts in stores during the middle of the day on random visits to stores hasn't gone completely as desired, but the occasional find has made it pretty fun.

The count to date:

Chevrolet SS - Found at a rural Walmart at 11:30 am
Sand Blaster - Found at a nearby Walmart around 4:30 pm
Camaro Special Edition - Found at neighboring town Walmart around 3 pm
'71 Mustang Mach 1 - Found on a Saturday afternoon grocery run at Harmon's Market (I found two)
'07 Mustang - no luck
'55 Chevy Bel Air Gasser - no luck
'70 Chevelle SS - Found at two different Walmarts on the same day (one at 10 am, one at 5 pm)
Twin Mill - no luck
'64 Chevy Nova Wagon - no luck
'83 Silverado - we will get to that
'76 Greenwood Corvette - not out in my area yet

6 out of 10 ain't bad, especially considering all were found in the middle of the day.

And we have an update.  I have had a surprising couple of days while traveling for business, and it started with a first.  My first gas station find.

I spent Tuesday evening driving south from Salt Lake City to St. George, Utah, and I inevitably had to stop for gas.  That meant hitting the Flying J in Beaver, Utah.  While pumping gas, I went into the convenience store for a bottle of water.  While wandering, I saw two small bins with a total of about 50 Hot Wheels, and I of course had a look.

The first thing I noticed, they were crazy expensive for the US - $2.99.  I told myself while starting to look that I would only purchase one if it were a cool error or a Super.  I saw a few models I liked, but left.  Then I saw a Mazda RX-7 Treasure Hunt.  It is a Hunt I would normally pick up, but $2.99 was a deterrent.  That is until I saw one of the last cars in the second bin:

Yep, that is the '07 Mustang Super from 2013.  The fourth time I have found that model.  Glad it is one I really like.

I said this was my first gas station find.  It is also the oldest Super I have ever found.  It was released almost a year ago.  Certainly it hasn't sat in that bin that long, but it is interesting to wonder how long it has been there.  Considering the $2.99 price, maybe awhile.

I bit the bullet and went with these:

So that was fun enough, finding an old Super in such an odd location.  But it did nothing to help my quest in 2014.  But I made some progress yesterday.

The theme for my finds this week has been water.  I went into the Flying J for a bottle on Tuesday, leaving with a Super, and the same happened at Target in St. George on Wednesday afternoon.  Of course any visit to Target means a visit to the pegs, and while those pegs weren't full, there were some interesting models.

First, I saw the Porsche 993 in white, meaning the K case was there.  Then the black Hakosuka Skyline.  Then the Ford Fiesta Treasure Hunt.  Our friends at DiecastTVChannel were looking for one, so I could send them this one as part of a trade.  Regular Hunts get left all the time, but there is always the chance it could mean this was a pegged case that hadn't been looked at yet.   Midway down, behind a couple of cars, there is was:

It seems I find Supers well after they were released, after collectors have moved onto the next one, so this we surely unexpected.  I was happy to take it home.

Not a bad two-day haul:

Think I can keep the streak alive?

Has the last Super of 2014 been unveiled, or the first of 2015?

This VERY interesting photo just started circulating, and it definitely piques our curiosity:

So what are we looking at?  A strange, but fantastic-looking, recolor of the 2014 Kool Kombi?  Or the first Super of 2015?

Either way, we want it.  Your thoughts?

Up-to-Date: All 2014 Super Treasure Hunts released so far, and Lamley reader's favorite...

11 Supers in.

Sure, we know almost all of the Supers for 2014 already, but it is amazing that the 11th batch is now out.  That means only four more and 2015 is upon us.

We profiled the 11th, the Greenwood Corvette, earlier today, but if you remember, we did a poll asking our readers to tell us what their favorite Super was of the first 10.  To say it was a landslide would be an understatement.  The '55 Chevy Bel Air Gasser ran away with the vote, almost doubling the amount of the second place finisher.  The results:

  1. '55 Bel Air Gasser - 27%
  2. Camaro Special Edition - 14%
  3. '71 Mustang Mach 1 - 12%
  4. '07 Ford Mustang - 10%
  5. Chevrolet SS - 9%
  6. '64 Chevy Nova Wagon - 9%
  7. '70 Chevelle SS - 8%
  8. '83 Silverado - 5%
  9. Sandblaster - 3%
  10. Twin Mill - 3%
There are not too many surprises on that list.  I expected the Gasser to win, but not by that much.  I expected the Sandblaster and Twin Mill to finish last, but not by barely beating out the '83 Silverado.

In case you were wondering, this would be Lamley's rank, from best to worst:
  1. '83 Silverado
  2. '55 Bel Air Gasser
  3. '71 Ford Mustang
  4. '70 Chevelle SS
  5. '64 Chevy Nova Wagon
  6. '07 Mustang
  7. Chevrolet SS
  8. Camaro Special Edition
  9. Sandblaster
  10. Twin Mill
We all agree on the bottom two, but not the others.  The Gasser is truly a spectacular model, with perfect wheels and a fantastic deco.  But when a favorite casting like the Silverado gets the Super treatment, and it is executed well, it takes the belt around here.  Of course, with five more Supers to go, that can and will most certainly change.  At least for us.  We will see if it changes for our readers as well when we do our next poll.

Of course, if you read our feature on the Greenwood Vette, you know that it now takes the #1 spot for us, so move every other model down a spot.

So without further ado, for your records, every Super TH released so far in 2014:

Chevrolet SS

Sand Blaster

Hot Wheels Special Edition Camaro

'71 Mustang Mach 1

'07 Mustang

'55 Chevy Bel Air Gasser

'70 Chevelle SS

Twin Mill

'76 Greenwood Corvette
