Hot Wheels Super Treasure Hunt Update & Lamley Poll: Which is your favorite of the first 10?

With the release of 2014 Hot Wheels Batch K and '83 Silverado Treasure Hunt, we are now officially 10 Supers into the year.

Still no RLC sales, Retro and Cool Classics are lagging a bit, but the mainline keeps chugging along. It has been an interesting year for the Super TH's.  Chevrolet is getting a lot of love this year, with 6 of the 10 all being of the bowtie.  (And we also know the next three will be Chevy as well.)  The breakdown:

Chevy - 6
Ford - 3
Non-licensed - 1

Variety has not been the strongpoint of the Supers this year.  After two Toyotas last year, JDM has taken a back seat, Europe continues to be ignored following the Ferrari 599XX Super in 2012, and Mopar is nonexistent.  We can save that complaint until we know the full 15, and in the meantime just look at what is already out and pick a fave.

So, which of the first 10 do you think takes the cake?  Give these review, in order of release, and vote below:

Chevy Camaro Special Edition

Cool is Cool is Cool: Hot Wheels '83 Chevy Silverado, Part 2 - Modern Classics, Police Rods, and other must-haves...

This is something I have meant to do for awhile.  For the last few years I have watched ebay auctions on the '83 Silverado, wondering if it was a good idea to pull the trigger on a few models I regret not picking up earlier.  It seemed I always talked myself out of it.  But when the news arrived that the Silverado would be a Super in the 2014 Hot Wheels lineup, it was time to pounce.  We didn't need the hype surrounding the Super to push the models we wanted up even higher.

So a little ebay purchase spree I embarked, buying the Silverados that have been on the Lamley want list for some time.  And since we showcased the 2014 version earlier today, why not show the others that we just added to the collection?

We won't do a full write-up on all of these, but there are two that were the must-haves for the Lamley collection - the Modern Classics and Police Rods.

Starting with the Modern Classics.  That is where this casting, which has proven very popular, debuted.  While I don't know if the Modern Classics was fully conceptualized by Jun Imai, I do know that the line was his.  Any new tool introduced in the line, including the Silverado, was his creation.  I have said before that Jun does an amazing job of linking to car culture in his castings, whether by slight modifications, change in stance, or other details.  The Silverado is a perfect example.

It is amazing how many Silverados from this era you still see on the road.  The flat grill and boxy style, which Chevy signatures from that time, are not necessarily memorable.  But when the casting is lowered and given a wide stance, its boxiness because a huge asst.  Its height perfectly pays homage to that California car culture that worships this truck, while still keeping its original lines completely intact.  And add to that a stock deco done in Hot Wheels spectraflame red on the Modern Classics version, and you have a perfect model.  (So perfect, we ponied up for two.)

Next, the Police Rods version.  We have never featured a model from this series before on Lamley, and it is somewhat forgotten.  A few years ago Hot Wheels produced three lines - Military, Fire, and Police - and used the same castings in each line.  Some models hung on the pegs forever, and some barely appeared anywhere, mainly because big retailers refused to stock the line after poor sales.  As a result, there are a handful of models from this line that command big dollars because of their rarity.

For a Silverado collector, this makes things difficult.  The Military and Fire Rods versions are very hard to find, and expensive to acquire.  Thankfully though, the easier-to-find Police Rods version is by far the best looking of the three.  It sports a very simple police livery that seems era-appropriate, whether of not the truck was actually used as pursuit vehicle.  And yes, North Olsted is a real place in Ohio, and that is the police marker on the door.

As for the others, we are thrilled to have them too.  The 2010 Valentine's Day exclusive, Hot Ones, and Decades versions are all lookers, again with very era-appropriate decos.  We dig.

We hope to add more in the future, but we will take it slow.  We are happy with what we have...

One other note.  We are aware of the 4x4 version, and even have that truck in the collection.  It looks good jacked up, and is once again era-appropriate.  It doesn't, however, share the lowered version's propensity for pure coolness.  The upcoming RLC model might change that.

But out of fairness, here she is:

Sometimes you are a little late to the game on a model.

The prices on ebay indicate that there were A LOT of people late to the game on the Datsun 510, and thankfully we weren't one of them.  The black 5-spoke version we acquired back then would be near impossible to get now.  If we had to predict, the First Editions of the R34 Skyline in grey and blue may be the next to be high on the "late to the game" list.  (Look at us, creating hype out of nothing.  Fun.)

But we have been severely late to game on several things.  Modern Classics come to mind.  I remember buying the Camaro Concept and Dodge Challenger, and leaving a whole lot of others I am scrambling to get now.  Vintage Racing?  Another line that I skipped on because of the $5 price point.  I bought two Datsuns thankfully, but left a slew of others.  At one point I finally bought the Vintage Racing '71 AMC Javelin that I had passed on the pegs at a rural Kmart for over a year, and I am glad I did.

But we aren't here to talk about those lines or models.  We are here to talk about the '83 Chevy Silverado.  A model that has been enjoying quite the party, and we at Lamley only recently arrived.

Many of you who follow Lamley on Instagram have noticed we have been creating a small Silverado collection, with several packages arriving in the last couple of weeks.  That was on purpose, as we figured now was as good of a time as any to start the collection, considering the Silverado Super TH has just been released.

We have by no means created a complete collection of the Silverado, but we have most of the models we have been after.  With the ultra-rare Military and Fire Rods models out there, along with an RLC exclusive, we may never finish the collection, but that is ok.  We think we have a nice variety.

And since we want to show all of them off, one post would be far too long.  So we are dividing it into two.  We will start this morning with our photos of the just-released Super Treasure Hunt, along with its mainline counterpart.

Why is the Silverado one of our Cool is Cool is Cool models?  Easy.  It already has been.  It was part of our first CiCiC feature on classic red pickups, and we highlighted the Decades version from a few years ago.  Classic pickups, especially those from the 70's and 80's, are going to get our attention, so we are still baffled as to why we have been passing on the Silverado.  It has a great stance, simple detail, and was designed by Jun Imai.  Jun infuses car culture into his designs, and the Silverado is no exception.

For now, let's concentrate on the Super TH.  It is interesting, because it seems the Silverado has been a signature Hot Wheels model for quite awhile now, that the Super marks only the third time the casting has sported Real Riders.  RLC, Slick Rides, and now.  It has enjoyed a few premium versions, but in basic wheel lines like Modern Classics, Decades, Holiday, and Police/Fire/Military Rods.  The basic version is also the first with PR5 wheels, which in our opinion work nicely.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy our pics of what is easily one of our Top 3 Supers for 2014 (nothing will beat the "Cool is Cool is Cool" legend that is the Greenwood Corvette, but that is for another time).
